Stepper Gears: Through the Firewall?

Here for the those interested is the possibility of accessing the air distribution drum stepper via the firewall, after removal of the air conditioning system.

Through the firewall - wide

(VEHICLE PICTURED IS RHD - but the air distribution stepper is in the same place for LHD models too)
With the air conditioning system removed from in front of the firewall the rectangular hole shown provides limited access to the air distribution stepper.

Through the firewall - detail

This closer detail shows that access is made more difficult by an air distribution vent tube.

Dash out

Here the dash (fascia) is out of the vehicle and you can see there's reasonable access to the air distribution stepper. The smaller hole through the firewall (see above) however makes in-car access much more restricted.
