(Air distribution stepper - behind the instrument panel). Disconnect the wiring connector. Remove the front two (easily visible) screws from the metal bracket holding the assembly. Using a long flexible phillips driver, reach in through the dash and unscrew the third screw at the back (not easily visible). Remove the stepper assembly and bracket by pulling away from the air distribution drum. Rotate and pull away the triangular plate on the drum, revealing the drum spindle. With a torch and small mirror (if necessary) inspect the plastic spindle. If broken or cracked retrieve broken parts with long-nosed pliers and glue back into place with Araldite or similar epoxy glue. Photo- a great view of the drum housing from the RH side, with plastic air duct pipes, drum triangular plate and stepper motor assembly removed. (Photo courtesy of Steve Remington) LHD & RHD: Push the ring on the drum spindle and rotate it until the notches have aligned with the spindle protrusions and the ring is fully seated. Photo- close up of the drum spindle. The reinforcing ring fits over this. Note the T-shaped centre of the spindle for alignment. (Courtesy of Steve Remington) Ready to re-install! You are now ready to replace the overhauled stepper gearboxes (see Gearbox Assembly ) and return all parts to their original positions (to reinstall: follow the numbered sequence in reverse order). You will now realise the value of having carefully labelled and stored all removed parts. If you have installed AlfaPro replacement stepper gears and fitted the drum reinforcing ring, you can at least be confident of not having to do this tedious job again anytime soon (and possibly not again during the life of the car).
