AlfaPro Alfa Romeo 164 Stepper Gears

Stepper Gears: Alternative Access, Left Hand Drive, Part 1

[Steppers Access (Index)] [Access Introduction] [Part 2] [Part 3]

This is an alternative method of accessing the steppers to replace the stepper gears - and optionally - to check the air distribution drum and fit the drum shaft reinforcing ring.

For LHD vehicles it is necessary to cut out a section of the wall of the glovebox (note that although it isn't pretty to look at it won't be visible when the glovebox is closed, and cosmetic repair is possible once the job is completed).

How much glovebox wall should be cut out? Here are two possibilities - (above: Lennart Krook, left: Doug Sedon).

The two steppers are behind here as shown in our diagrams on the Steppers - Intro page. (See that page before continuing).

The two steppers are clipped onto a single metal bracket. Remove the fan blower motor from in front (two screws) and separate the power connector. You will see more clearly the layout of the stepper assembly.

You may find it necessary to cut off the front part of the bracket which holds the electrical connector and temperature sensor fan motor. If so, later a plastic cable tie can be used to secure the motor (pictured).

Remove the speed clip off the nylon shaft of the front (air temperature) stepper gearbox. We suggest cutting it off to avoid damage to the shaft (here the clip is shown already removed).
