AlfaPro Alfa Romeo 164 Stepper Gears
Replacement Stepper Gears - Specifications

What's so special about our precision replacement gears? With specialist advice we designed the following combination: the smallest gear has bronze outer and mild steel inner teeth, the same for the middle gear, and the larger (which takes most of the pulsing, wearing constantly on the same 3-4 teeth) has bronze outer and hardened steel inner teeth. Durability is where it is needed most.

These gears are not mass produced, but precision-made in small lots by a specialist workshop, so considerable skilled workmanship is involved. However, due to lower manufacturing costs in Australia and currency exchange rates we are able to offer them at a competitive price. These gears cost less than a new stepper assembly from Alfa and even the new one, we understand, still has nylon (plastic) gears inside. (Nylon, by the way, runs smoother and quieter, and is fine for fast-spinning applications, but in this pulsing/shunting application nylon teeth wear quickly and break).

Don't do the job again next year. There is a considerable time and cost in accessing the gearboxes behind the dash and removing/replacing each assembly. Why spend this effort or money only to replace the cause of most problems (the plastic gears) with another similar set?

In summary, we believe these miniature gears, manufactured to demanding quality standards, are far superior to the original parts they replace.

164 owners (including us!) have needed a long-lasting fix for this problem: and that's what we have set out to achieve with these replacement parts.

Note- A full set is required to overhaul both the steppers found behind the dash in the 164, however if you want to recondition only one stepper gearbox we also offer a 'half set':

The air distribution drum reinforcing ring (highly recommended) is available at a small additional cost.
