Our replacement metal gears have been successfully installed in 164's worldwide since 1998. They provide a long-term solution to the annoying problem of "stepper motor failure" (actually stepper motor gearbox gears failure!) in the heating/aircon system. Behind the dash of the Alfa Romeo 164 with automatic climate control there are two stepper motors: one opens and closes a flap to allow hot/cold air into the climate control system and the other controls a distribution drum directing controlled-temperature air around the car's interior vents. The motors achieve this through reduction gearboxes which convert the motor revolutions to high-torque, slow acting lever motions. Inside each of these stepper motor gearboxes there are five small gears (or cogs): two metal and three plastic. The plastic gears have a high failure rate and short life, and cause expensive and time-consuming repairs. There is a solution. The metal gears we supply replace all three plastic originals in each stepper gearbox for a dependable and long-lasting overhaul. The replacements are made of bronze, mild steel and hardened steel in a combination designed to give maximum strength and longevity. A full set is required to overhaul both stepper gearboxes of the 164's climate control system, however if you want to recondition only one stepper gearbox we also offer a 'half' set.
